Grey Forest Dryad

Once, long ago she was a forest nymph, and she had a name. But that was before the time of men on the Earth, and her memory of those days was like a wispy thread of smoke, which could easily be dissipated on the breeze of new events. Fortunately new events were rare in this forest, with the last significant one being the time an old tree fell, and just missed crushing her under its great weight. It was the self same tree she had watched from the time it was an acorn buried by a wee forest animal, to when it first sprouted, and on up to becoming a mighty oak, which grew diseased and died. When its roots no longer had strength, it lost hold to the ground and fell within a few feet of her. At the time, she wondered at her inability to be frightened, seeing that the tree might have brought her end. But it did not, and that event was... how long ago?

All color had eventually gone from the world she was in, but had it really? Might it be that the color escaped her vision? She had known that some suffered this, so perhap she too suffered? It had been so long since she had seen color, that her memory of what it was like had also faded, like all else in her long existence.

Her existence had been unnaturally long indeed, for men had come upon the Earth, and had over time built their cities, fought their wars, and some had even walked on the Moon. These were things she knew intuitively, for she was physically connected to the Earth, and it imparted such knowledge to her; though she had little if any use for it. She had been cursed as punishment for an utterance she had let slip in the presence of Mother Nature.

That utterance had been her disdain for green things, like the forest she had once frolicked in with her sisters, The green had been great cover for creatures that were of the same color, but had been the cause of the deaths of all her sisters. At that memory, a drop of dew formed and fell from her eye. She watched it as it made its way to the ground. She had expressed her displeasure with the color green for its betrayal of her sisters.

Mother Nature heard, and was greatly displeased. "You would have all color taken out of the world?" she asked.

"If it helped to prevent the death of others, I would have it!" she said boldly.

"You shall have your wish in this place, but going forth from this place for you will no longer be possible. The color will drain slowly away as you watch, and that will be a very long time happening!" Mother Nature had spoken her curse, and it became so. The nymph was changed, becoming a dryad, and one leg became firmly rooted to the ground.

As it happened the last color she had seen was just before the tree fell, and it was the color of the roots as they released their hold upon the already dead tree trunk. A kind of sickly blonde and reddish color that bespoke of the rot within the tree.

The wisp of smoke that was her memory had coalesced once more, and with it came a fleeting recollection of what her name had once been. Daph? No. Daphn? Still not right! Daphne? Sounded right, but was it? The wispy memory had been dissipated yet again, as something fell before her, A pair of leaves attached to each other by their stems. She reached out and it settled into her hand. Was that color she was seeing? Something in her knew it was, and that it was the color she had spoken her disdain for so long ago. But now it was the only color she could see, and she loathed the thought of letting it escape her grasp. It was a small bit of green brightness in an otherwise dreary grey world.
