Title: Ready to throw Poser out the Window Q
Post by: OFW on February 08, 2015, 08:41:36 PM
HELP!!! My laptop runs Windows 8.1  I was running into problems with some of my scripts from RDNA and so instead of trying to track down all of the parts for each script, I opted to do a complete uninstall (clearing out registry and everything) then reinstall using the SM Downloader (Poser 10).  Before, I would have issues with some images not rendering completely, but it was a random issue and usually after a computer restart, I was able to do the render.  Now, however, I cannot render anything that has indirect lighting or sub surface scattering.  When I do, it finishes the first pass, then just stops rendering.  I tried to use render passes but I got told that Poser was out of memory.  Now, mind you, I'm running with 6 gig's of ram and some of the stuff I tried rendering I had rendered previously just fine.  I was going to try to use Semideui's (sorry, I know this is a mis-spell but I think everyone will know who I mean) render script but now that won't even run.  I'm so fed up, I'm ready to scream...Just when I was finishing up a couple of items for the store and a sweet Valentines day freebie :(

Have You checked your flash player and seen if it is up to date also your video drivers  also Poser 10 has a service patch
Service Release 5.1 (SR5.1) - IMPORTANT Version: 10.0.5.28445, Released 12/17/2014

That is about all I can say As I  have poser 5.

Yea, part of the rational behind the new downloader was so that it was easier to keep track of updates...I made sure I installed everything, including that update.  My flash and video drivers are also all up to date and I ran a full diagnostics on my computer to make sure my ram was functioning properly and find any other issues.  Ram tested perfectly and other issues were resolved easily so I don't think it's so much a problem with my computer as something in Poser, but I wanted some feedback before I go to SM with it (figuring the more information I had before hand, the better the response would be from them.)

some of the google search info states something about external library .... and the sequence of installation ... ?  Most people are having issues with PP2014 more than P10 ...

I installed with the SM Downloader, and installed the base then all of the content, then the SR5 and content update.  I tried to make sure I installed everything in the proper order...google's been no help for me either, as you said, most issues are with 2014 (which I really want to upgrade to but can't afford until they put it on sale again).  The part I really can't understand is the scene's I've rendered perfectly prior to this won't render now....I'm totally flummoxed by it all

Not certain if this is any help at all but when I have had issues with Poser all I did to get it to behave was delete all of the preferences found in the My Documents > Application Data > Poser ...

If you do not see it you might have to go to the tool bar and click on Tools > Folder options > select show hidden folders

Then go to C:> Documents and settings > Users > Application Data > Poser ... delete the preference files I don't recall the name of them as I am work but there is three files that you have get rid of and then go back to business as usual.

Took me a few to find it in the Win 8.1 structure as it has changed a bit.  However, once I located it, I found 2 poser folders with version 10 in them, regular and poser pro.  I'm attaching screenshots so you can see what each contains...and mayhap give me some bloody clue as to what to delete lol

Poser 10

From the file Library Pref all the way down. A total of eight (8) files.
Leave the folders when you restart Poser it will build new default preferences and then you can tweak as you like.

Poser Pro 10

Library Pref and the config file for Poser again leave the folders

Basically all he XML files and the Poser Config file go bye-bye ....  leave the folders in there.

Obviously do this with Poser closed then when you open Poser it will build a fresh set of files

I don't have Poser 10...I have 2012 pro (Which is just 9 on steroids) installed on win 8.1 and this is the way the folder looks by default.

Have 7, 9 and 10 over here and when it starts misbehaving all those stand alone file that you are showing in the directory are the ones I delete restart and it plays nice then.

Have to redo all ones personal preferences default stage, camera, lighting, render parameters and so on but if that is what it takes to get it to play nice then it is the way to roll.

I have noticed something strange about Poser and win 8.1.... My Poser Pro disc is a dual install, both 32 and 64 bit versions...but, if I launch the 64 bit version it will crash or lock up tighter than a nuns...(%$##@)

The 32 bit version runs fine....even though it's on a 64 bit OS. Go figure!

Hmm, well we still be in the Dark Ages as I still run XP Pro 64 bit.

Do intend to get on the Window 7  cart but not going near 8

That's just it! It works fine on my XP and win 7 32 and 64 bit systems....just goes wonky on 8.1

i installed my 64 bit version into my 32bit version folders it's the only way I can get it working correctly

Interesting! Now if I can just figure out why that works I'd be in high cotton...LOL

I really hate double posting but...I just noticed something...When I installed Poser to 8.1 it duped all of the dll's in two folder locations...

Program Files
Program Files (x86)

The render engine is launched by means of a dll, if that dll is called twice at the same time is causes a "memory access violation" ...sooo her problem may be a dll conflict!

check out this link  (https://support.smithmicro.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/2369/%7E/installing-poser-debut,-poser-10,-and-poser-pro-2014-download-version---windows)

As I said before....I install software differently..LOL That Download Manager application could very well be the source of everyone's problems. just from the images I can see where things can go bad in a hurry...LOL

I tried J's idea and was able to complete a simple single person render with both SSS and IDL and procedurals on the clothing items (no props or background), so that is at least a step in the right direction.  I'll try a more complicated scene later on.

I wondered if this was perhaps part of the problem....8.1 does wonky things to anything installed and without the benefit of a CD/DVD player I'm a bit stuck.

Well...these days a flash drive takes the place of rom drives. the average dvd is just a hair over 7gigs....I have flash drives that are 40gig...LOL In the case of a dll conflict, the simple solution is to remove the twin causing the problem.

Kinda like I did with my twin that resided with me in my Mother's womb. I ate him! I was never good at sharing my throne with anyone.

It is possible....That would explain the fugly. There just simply wasn't enough dna left to reconstruct anything greater.

Sorry I've been MIA, came down with a wicked cold last night and just haven't been up to doing much today...however, I did attempt to render a more complex scene and it was a bust.  Being able to do a simple scene will suffice for now, however, as I just found out my new MAC book for school will be here on Monday and I'll probably just end up loading Poser on it, instead, though I'm going to have a bit of a learning curve in switching platforms.
Thanks for all of your help, everyone.  :)

did you try downloading the scripts that you have added to your arsenal? Sometimes it is a script gone naughty.

I had to reinstall PP2014 because it did that. Reinstalled the program (windows 8.1) then reinstalled the script fresh too.

Make sure the Poser program has the latest update too.

Do you have multiple render settings? try doing those with a different setting..remove the ones you have added.

try your rendering with the original render settings to see if it behaves, then try with other things.

In flashplayer try turning off "enable graphics accelerator", this has been giving folks a problem since last update...LOL
