Adobe Illustrator CS4 Tip - When Hyphens Are a Turnoff in Illustrator

Layers Tip of the Day reader, Jan Rasmussen of El Segundo, CA, had a great question about Hyphens. In an email, Jan wrote, "Is it possible to globally turn off hyphenation in Illustrator? I deal with multiple language documents (up to 16 languages sometimes) and to keep things simple, words in all languages are not hyphenated. So far I've found that it is possible to turn off Hyphens for just individual Text Frames in the Paragraph panel. Is there a way to do turn off Hyphens permanently?"
 
I answered, "Absolutely, but it takes a little work because you have to change the default Paragraph Style and create a custom startup file. To do so, choose File>Open and on a Mac, go to Users/User/Library/Application Support/Adobe/Adobe Illustrator CS4/New Document Profiles Documents or on a PC, go to Settings/User/Application Data/Adobe/Adobe Illustrator CS4 Settings/New Document Profiles. Open the Profile you wish to change.

Then double-click on the "Normal Paragraph Style" in the Paragraph Styles panel to Change the defaults. In the Hyphenation section, click the check box for Hyphenate twice, so it is totally blank, and press OK to apply. Then go to File>Save As and give your custom profile a new name. All new document created using this custom New Document Profile will not use Hyphens."
