Any bruising should be reported to your Doctor if you didn't know how it got there.

Disable Cortana
« on: April 07, 2017, 05:47:26 PM »
It is part of the system and you cannot uninstall it.

Well, talking to ye ole IT guy at work and ta-da you can disable it, like I need something running in the background to help me search the web .... seriously ... or recommend sites to me ... I don't think so

It turns out it is not to terribly difficult either and since no one else has discussed this here we go,

First you need to get to the command prompt,

Once in there then enter gpedit.msc

This opens the Local Group Policy Editor

Open the Windows Component tab

Open Search

You will find a setting called "Allow Cortana" its current state is "not configured" right click on it, and select edit, then in the dialog box that pops up select disable.

Save

Regrettably the damn thing is still in the Task Manager and it is still running since it is part of the system and cannot be uninstalled but at least now it can, I hope no longer be a nosy parker.

Really don't know conclusively on Stormbringer, if this did what I wanted it to, since I do not connect it to the web at all, it was made for art not surfing the web.

But it is disabled now so maybe someone else here might feel froggy and try it and can report back on their findings.

It doesn't do anything if you don't activate it "J".   It sits there.

But if you want to try....take a peek here:  PCWorld

Your Browser knows more about you then Cortana ever will.

Nevertheless what the link outlined is the same thing I posted so I am not the wet fish one might have thought.

Nope....but I live on the philosophy that all things are not bad until they are proven bad...and so far Cortana hasn't bothered me a bit.  I don't even know it's there.  Plus I've learned that taking one thing off a computer could lead to many things that are tied in not to work...so if it doesn't pester...it stays and festers....

Hey now...that rhymed.  Sometimes I amaze myself :java:

You can't uninstall Cortana based on what your post stated and also what my IT person said, you can disable it though and that is all that I have done.

So therefore I have taken nothing off of my computer ...

However that being said I need no help or advice for web searches and that is the only point that I am making ...

I know with CCleaner we can turn off some things if we want. But more often I go in the tasks manager, to economize memory and disk of computer. Why use memory for the scanner when it's offline? :hypno: Or the camera? Just 2 examples.

When you try to turn Cortana off in the Task Manager it just turns itself back on

Have done so multiple times and it comes back on by itself, even when disabled it still can not be shut off via task manager ... all I was trying to achieve was to not allow it to make suggestions based on my previous actions on the web.

Which I have achieved.

Granted Stormbringer is not on the net for any reason unless I have to update software that I use.

The real point is that I will be getting another computer that will have W10 on it and it will be the new internet machine.

And all these stories with W10 don't get me envy to abandon W8, for sure  :blownaway: Always remember me a game "your computer is delivered with the garanty it will not take the controle before XXXX" - or a sentence in this taste.

Microphone is already offline, which is a plus to go fast in daily tasks.

Sorry it just seems like "big brother" is even closer when that damn thing is about ... and yes I know "big brother" is real and already permeates society on so many level that we are not aware of, that this is small fry ... but still any chance I get to stymie them ... I shall
