LINUX NEWBIE here!   Well, I have messed with it a little bit.  Not a lot, but enough to see that MANY things we touch in life out in the world and throughout the internet are run on Linux.   So I have scarfed a bunch of "highly recommended" items and am ready to be all sorts of disgusting to you experienced users.

I used only few Ubuntu last year, but it wasn't to keep it like system, more to save what I need to take on crazy computer.

So I'll keep an eye on that topic, because all Linux stuff are unknow to me.

A lot of people who tried Linux several years ago have an unpleasant memory of having to frequently use the command line to do usable work.  It has substantially improved, although I'm reminded of my friends' regular assertion that I would really like Woody Allen movies if I'd just watch "this" one.  It never worked.      So, Linux might not be for you.

One of the unusual features of Linux is that you have a choice of desktops.  Further, you can switch between them.

Most of the major Llinux distributions have, at least, Gnome, LXDE, Xfce, Cinnamon, MATE and KDE.  Some look like your phone and some look like Windows.

I hate Woody Allen movies.  Especially if he is IN them.   And absolutely if they are about him.

Any actor or actress puts themselves on my No Watch Anymore list by declaring they WANT to be in a Woody Allen film.   

So I got an idea where you're coming from, Sir Knight.

Uh  my phones look like Windows.   So if a Linux distro can look like windows, cool.   I recall Gnome and KDE and that's about it.  Nice thing now seems that  Windows 7 doesn't have a conniption fit if something "Linux" shows up on a USB port or in the optical drive.   
One very weird thing is that I have had NAT storage that give me a Windows CE interface.  But it's run from a Linux kernel.  And the drives format was Linux, not NTFS.  I also have some USB drives that the current TV provider formatted automatically as soon as they were plugged into the receivers USB port(s).  No warning, just blinkety blinkety lights and then a message onscreen said "DONE!  format complete, you may now store recorded shows to the new drive."  Mighty nice of them huh?   That format is Linux too.  Now, get this, I can use Linux to copy those files from the Linux drive to any of my NTFS drives in non-Linux format.  Linux seems to universally read all Windows formats no problem.   But Windows?  HAH!  You're kidding right!

Another thing I remember about Linux is that it was very difficult to get hardware working in it.   If the distro don't pick it up when its installed, I never got to see any of mine installed.   And then my software never worked in it.   Run WINE?  Hell I can't get my printer, scanners, BD drive to work.  Why bother?
M$ taking control of my entire set of windows devices via "Implied Permissions granted them by my use of W10 Home" is why it's time to bother.  Again.
W10 home is factory installed on my little RCA Cambio 2n1 Tablet only.   M$ also "upgraded" my favorite smartphone (FREE! poking in the *ss!) from Win Phone 8.1 (denim) to W10 one night.   It only took 4 hours of waiting for the damn thing to 'finish updating Windows!' for me to see positively that is what was done.   I didn't ask for nor do I want it.   It also refuses to revert to 8.1.
I want Win 7 Pro 64 bits on every system I own.   M$ is preventing that.


Please excuse this post, but I am very displeased with M$ lately.   And since I am hearing some positive things about various versions of Linux, I want to try it again.  Especially on that 2n1 Tablet.
