But it looks like some computers were updated from the last attack. And they were victims like non updated.
Anyway if the thing is passed by mail, the best thing is always to be sure it's really the people you know who sent you - or a partnair in affair. Because finally the weak link is human.
As I read, the malware is not attached to an email. It's hidden in a fake patch that is supposed to update a financial application used by many agencies in the world.

I think it would be great if we could have a program that can instantly detect a hack attack of any kind, and when it confirms the source to be malicious, it launches a counterattack that will target only that source and shut it down.

I know, the above is a pipe dream, but one can always wish.
DAZ Studio, Bryce, Poser, Wings 3D, Howler, Blender, PSP, Hexagon, MSO PowerPoint & Word, just a few of the programs I use.

This is from C-Net.com

How to protect against itThere are two ways Petya/GoldenEye attacks a computer. "The exploit attacks vulnerable Windows Server Message Block (SMB) service, which is used to share files and printers across local networks," said David Sykes, business security expert at Sophos. "Microsoft addressed the issue in its MS17-010 bulletin in March, but the exploit proved instrumental in the spread of WannaCry last month. The new Petya variant can also spread by using a version of the Microsoft PsExec tool in combination with admin credentials from the target computer."
These problems have been patched, but some people have not downloaded the fix, so it keeps spreading. Your first line of defense is to be sure you have the latest version of Windows: If you have automatic updates turned on, you're safe. The update should already be installed to your computer.
If you don't have auto update on, you can download the security update here:Windows has a download page for all versions available here.
Next, make sure that your antivirus software is up to date. Most antivirus companies already have patches out that block Petya and this new version of it.
Lastly, take sensible everyday precautions. Sykes recommends backing up your computer regularly and keeping a recent backup copy off-site. And don't open attachments in emails unless you know who they're from and you're expecting them.
Fear not,
You are never alone,
I am there to comfort and guide you...
Always.

Malwarebytes is a great proggie but since they went to put all the good stuff in the pro version, I had to uninstall cause I can't afford the pro version.

I only have Avast on Mac and AVG (the hog that it is) on PC
Even unpro, Malwarebytes is a good stuff.

As I read, the malware is not attached to an email. It's hidden in a fake patch that is supposed to update a financial application used by many agencies in the world.
I have stopped to follow step by step the news, so last thing I heard it was the "mail" possibility.
Financial... that explains why BNP Immo was touched. To greedy :psycho:

I didn't know Malwarebytes and several others until my first computer was about to die. Director of school had worked also in computers (it's a partial reconversion for some teachers) and he learnt me some tricks.
But it was an "old" computer, and finally it died months after even with that - only because of age.

Anyway, MwB, Ccleaner and others helped to keep it alive for a moment, checking and/or cleaning what it was necessary.

Yup...both have saved my butt a couple of times.....They are good programs as long as you keep them up to date and schedule your scans accordingly.  Same with any virus protection you have....update frequently if no auto update is available.  Malwarebytes will check for updates each time you use it if you have that feature checked...and CC Cleaner will let you know a new version is available.  My McAfee updates automatically each time it scans.   UPDATES....once again...is one of the keys to being safe.

...I read on that NATO may be considering an Article 5 response to global cyber terrorist attacks like the one that just occurred.

McAffee :OMG: My nightmare! Last time I had it, it became itself a virus when I obtained W10 pack between updates for W8.
RogueKiller was this which found the solution. Then MwB and co.
