Poll #1: Opposable Thumbs
« on: January 08, 2014, 07:30:48 PM »
The thumb contrasts with each of the other four by being the only digit that:

Is opposable to the other four fingers
Has two phalanges rather than three
Has greater breadth in the distal phalanx than in the proximal phalanx
Is attached to such a mobile metacarpus (which produces most of the opposability)

and hence the etymology of the word: "tum" is Proto-Indo-European for "swelling" (cf "tumour" and "thigh") since the thumb is the stoutest of the fingers.

Now that the lesson is over....Pick ONE of the above species that would doom us all if they had thumbs....

If your species is not listed, pick item 10 and then let us know WHY you think your choice would doom us.

Have fun....  This will be a non ending poll.  New folks and old might want to have some fun with this as time goes by.

:3flower; Cats of course!  They are already purring on our laps removing our energy and sending it all to the mother ship so that one day they will take over!!!

I have to agree with Wayii and CMC but then again Crows are possibly more intelligent than cats, very clever creatures, thieves (love sparkly, shiny things), and not so inclined to 'leisure pursuits'. Hard call, but anyone who owns a cat knows they really own you.

Don't know, cephalopods already have the upper hand, so to speak. We only have two hands and ten figures, they have up to ten freaking tentacles! If they could walk on land... let's just say there's a good reason monsters in horror films have tentacles. And sharks, sharks with thumbs don't scare me. Sharks with feet however--not even going there.  :thud:

To be honest though, we don't need another species with thumbs to doom us. We're doing a bang up job all on our own.
Sound the alarm, it's Semicharm!

Oh great just what I did not need to see, so much for owning another pet :tearlaugh:
