Attic Poll #9: What's Your Favorite Reading Material?
« on: March 31, 2014, 02:48:41 AM »
The art of literature has long inspired artists from other genres: music, painting, sculpture, film-making and even more literature. Books can take us away on mad, improbable adventures - be they historical, fantastical or sci-fi. They can give us a glimpse into times and personalities that are long gone, yet left their marks in history, or on our minds. We can watch madness unfurl, evil, magic, strange worlds and more from the safety of our own comfy chair...or bed, if you read before you sleep. Books can introduce us to far-away places, strange animals and plants, different cultures, and various beliefs. They teach, they amaze and amuse and when you think about it, a really good book is a magical thing.

So! Pick three (3) of your favorite genres from above and if you like, tell us what some of your most favorite books are, and what was it about them that made them special to you. If you read something that's not in the list, feel free to add it below!

Still trying to make up my mind here before voting.

I do like a good fantasy adventure - especially the sort that are continued in several volumes that expand on the world and characters involved. Some of those that come to mind are: Frank Herbert's "Dune" books; Stephen R. Donaldson's "Thomas Covenant" series; Roger Zelazny's "Amber" books; Michael Moorcock's "Elric" series, Eric von Lustbader's "Sunset Warrior" books, C.S. Lewis's "Perelandra" books (and others), etc. They do take the imagination away!

Toward more 'cerebral' subjects, some of the best books I ever read were James A. Michener's historical novels - notably "Hawaii" and "Centennial" for me; "Aztec" and "Aztec Autumn" by Gary Jennings...I know there are others I've read but brain is starting to shut down for the night.

As for actual history books, I highly recommend Herbert Zinn's "A People's History of the United States".

Some of my other favorite authors are Philip K. Dick, Ursula K. LeGuin, Clive Barker, and H.P. Lovecraft.

So, what about you?

I had been looking at him earlier Prae. I guess he's got Alzheimer's. :( He certainly is a very popular author!

I do love Norah Roberts but lots of others too like Barbara Erskin.  I can read a book in a day too when I am on holiday.
Hard to pick only three as I love all books really.

Indeed should have put a choice called "printed word on paper"
"But who is stronger, truly, I asked myself, he who continues to wound and bleed himself to please others, or he who refuses any longer to do so?"

Hey, Lufias -- looks like you and I have the same taste in books. Dean Koontz is my all time favorite author, but I like all the others you depicted as well. I also like authors like Steve Berry, Dale Brown, John Sandford, James Patterson -- the list goes on and on. If I'm not on the computer, I'm reading.

Yup...I have my favorites and King and Koontz are just two of many.  Love Robin Cook also as well as Mary Higgins Clark, James Patterson, Michael Critchon, John Saul, Anne Rice and Micheal Palmer, to name a few....
