So I have been banging my head against this for days now and have got to the point of not knowing where to next, the whole thing just feels a little flat and the lighting sucks, right now I have a feeling its so dark you wont be able to see a thing but any brighter and it just starts looking washed out and over bright.
Oh I am working in poser too

I have three infinite lights, one as my mane shadow caster/light source with a shadow map on it, one as a diffuse IBL and one as a spec light

Sorry, my pizza finished baking as I began to answer you.

I took it into PShop and copied the layer twice so I could see better what you're doing there. How sad - wah! See below. I copied the base twice and set one copy to Linear Light and the top one to Screen. See below

I don't know where you've got your lights at but I think what you're trying to do is just have the light coming from the fire on them - yes?

The problem with Infinite lights is you might think you know what side of the image they're on. But that's not necessarily where they are per the light ball adjustment. Are you looking at that or the Light Properties? You can turn them into Spots so you can see where they are footage wise. I've had those IBLs go WAY out on me like 300-6oo feet (+X or -X) out and up (Y). :whuaat: Then go to your Top Camera and zoom out and see if they're where they should be. From that vantage you can just drag them with the (X/Y) Move tool. Once you get them where you want then you can turn them back into Infinite lights and tweak the X,Y,Z Rotations very gently with the slider bar. Then go back to your Main Camera and see how it looks.

What's the Intensity on your brightest (the fire) light? You can crank it up past 100% to even 200% or better.

On the other hand, if you've done all that, then maybe you just need one more fill light closer to them that's the same color as the fire light(s) but darker to the characters to light them up. Still coming from the same general direction but maybe - a distance of something on the minus side between 0.0 and + or - 1.0-ish (Z)  that will illuminate them. Or just use a Point light like that but keep the Intensity down and maybe no more than 10.0' or so away from them (X). Down low on the Y position.

I pulled the lights together from scratch basing them off attached image, the fires are ment to be way down the valley so not a light source

Just checked and the lights don't seem to be miles out

I have them way down, Sun is at 50% and the others round 20%. Started with the main one at 100% and it was way too bright as I was trying for late in the day and stormy

I'm going to have a play with a spot light to replace the main light, try for a "sun through a cloud gap" kind thing with the other lights just filling in the background a bit.

One other thing that is bugging me is to my eye at lest they look like they are floating above the scene rather than being part of it. I know they are on the ground as I went round from every side to make sure lol

Its not meant to be 100% sad, it was meant more along the lines of releaf and thankfullness and feeling safe again after every thing just took a fast car to hell

I don't think that light that's hitting them has the Shadows turned on or it's not turned or tilted to where it's hitting them right to cast the shadow for the illusion of them being on the ground.

Remember, it's all illusions!

Oh ha.... I meant I didn't know where you had the lights in the image not where you got them from. No prob.

Okay, so the fire's down below, but isn't that the light from it illuminating them from the side?

Could you put a Spot on the fire N/Y-up and W(Y/X up a little from it. Then use an Infinite Lt tilted up in their general direction to light them and maybe a fill light if you need it in front of them?

It's hard to say without seeing your light settings/Properties: XYZ Trans, and knowing where they are in relation to the Characters. But maybe that will work for you. Lights are a big B-atch to learn and I don't know nearly all there is about them. Mine's mostly what I've learned from really playing with them and getting different effects and studying where they're actually at when they do work right.

Is that the image you used in your IBL light too? If so that could be the problem because that side they're on is dark which would keep the light from reaching them enough to highlight them.

Totally understandable and at least they still have each other. It's still sad though to see your house or anyone's burn down and lose everything.

That could well be it.

Oh  hehe right main is in the upper right of image lighting from the side and slightly behind figures. Spec in lower right and from the front side and the diffuse is just left of center front

it's meant to be sunlight coming from the side, if the fire were to be casting light that far it would be behind them more

Maybe my perspective is off too but the fires in the valley are meant to be too far away to be casting light on the characters

If it wasn't such a complex scene I could probably get screen grab so you could see where things are

If you look at it from the Top Camera can you see where the lights are and render that, then mark about where each of the lights is? And which light it is? That might help.

You 'can' use the image in the IBL but I know the ones I'm thinking of the image is 300 x 300 square. If you were to square that one, I'd use the right hand side of it which is lighter. The tree is the only bright thing on the left side of the image because it's catching the light fairly well.

Try something along these lines with your lights:

Light 1: Infinite - non-IBL
XRot = -70
Y Rot = +20
Z Rot = -23
Intensity 100%
Scale 55%
Turned temporarily to a Spot it's about X = +35, Y = +60, Z= +22
Turn back to Infinite

Light 2: Spot
XRot = -222
Y Rot = +122
Z Rot = -201
Intensity 100%
Scale 142%
It's about: X = +27, Y = +25, Z= +11

Light 3: Spot
XRot = -232
Y Rot = -118
Z Rot = +39
Intensity 48%
Scale 100%
It's about: X = +20, Y = -3, Z= +34

I have finally got some thing I am happy with, by the time I do a bit of post work on it it will be sweet.
Thanks for all the tips Rayvn, they helped a lot in fine tuning where the issues were.

Main light ended up at some thing like
X -45
Y 300
Z 563
