Having lived in Calif. for half my life I lived through some much bigger ones, but never had one go for 2 minutes. I remember the worst one I ever experienced kept building and building for a minute and just when I thought OMG it's the big one it stopped. Since I worked in insurance I kept having to go back to Calif every time they had a good sized earthquake, so I got to see the epicenters of most of them till the insurance company I worked for decided to stop insuring homes. I guess the earthquakes and hurricanes losses got to be too much for them. I slept through most of the earthquakes...smile. They always seem to come when I was asleep. Only had one come when I was awake and I thought I was drunk for a couple seconds.

When we had them here, I remember I was laying on the living room couch half asleep. Suddenly, heard this boom and I was sort of bounced on the couch. Not much but enough to notice when I came back down.

Isn't that just great - that the insurers won't insure people for damage like that any more, when there's so much more possibility of it - now than ever - since there was homeowners' insurance?

Actually, Northern California, besides being on a fault system that's always slippin' and slidin' they are doing a lot of fracking up there as well. In fact, that ground water is being used to irrigate crops. There are other 'joyous' sorts of things about all that, but they're too depressing to think about.

I was reading in the last six months about how it seems to be affecting the Valley faults, as well as in Death Valley. Not San Andreas, but another one, I don't remember the name of it. Maxwell...maybe?

Anywhere you have mountains you're going to have fault lines from the mountain building (orogenous zone) where the bedrock thrust upward. There are several mountain ranges just in Death Valley area alone - some of them volcanic. California's full of mountains and hills. Utah's one of the most faulted states I ever saw in the Wasatch Basin in particular. They're narrow and not long but as I recall, they're deep.

From my days as a mining, geological drafter.

Anyone remember the James Bond flick, "View to a Kill?" The bad guy was trying to do some serious fracking!

Now, to display more of my considerable ignorance on these things....... Where did they come up with the term 'fracking?" Was someone a big BSG fan?  :ummm:
If all is not lost, why can't I find it??  :thud:

The injections are very high pressure fluid injections that 'fracture' the rock...thus 'fracking'. Nothing quite so colorful as BSG, I fear.

Another  word  will  fit  nicely there instead of  fracking  and  be  more  appropriate cause that is  what they are  doing to  mother  earth  cracking  the  underlying  support  structure  that we  stand  upon and  build our cities  and  homes  on

That other word was what 'fracking' meant in BSG

They just hopelessly greedy and egregious souls who see no wrong in anything....as long as they make $$$$$$!

They don't live in the 'real world'. They should have to, with no income and no assistance, no servants, no nothin'...because that's what they're aiming for - short costs, long profits and privatize everything. "To the Infernal Regions with the Rest of them out there!" is their motto. And when there's no one left, they can sleep peacefully in their crystal towers and rarified aires, on their beds stuffed with worthless monies they printed out of thin air.

Oh wait...they do that now.

I don't need a daisy to tell me I love Them not.

Can't say i was surprised to hear about the quake, given where it was and what's been going on there on a massive scale since all the natural gas companies decided to move out of this area a year or two ago... you all have touched on that already... but i am glad to know that none of you were injured or lost your house. last october our house burned down, so i have a new and much larger empathy for people in disasters now and for their wide array of emotions and fears.

new mexico has one natural fault line through albuquerque that was last active a few years ago. the reason we have so many incredibly preserved ruins is mostly because of how dry it is here, but the reason so many are still intact with original standing walls is because we don't have natural earthquakes.  sure would be sad if that were to change just because of people's greed.  at the same time, those companies are the ones we do environmental compliance work for, and when they leave the area we don't have any work anymore either.  been on 30 hours a week since last winter - museums don't pay for themselves to operate any more so our costs are usually covered by the compliance work we do. hard to know if i want to have them come back so i have work again, or want them to stay away so we don't become a new earthquake zone!

I just heard we had a small 3.8 quake in Yorkton Saskatchewan of all places. Saskatchewan!! We've had them here in Alberta thanks to fracking but Sask. is all farmland. Go figure.
Today is the tomorrow you worried about yesterday.

That's even in the flat-lands there, Madbat!

Likely Fafnir is right if there's a fault in Alberta that's gotten well-lubricated enough to start some movement. If I remember correctly, fracking in lower Michigan has been causing some slippage in the main fault that runs down into Ohio along one of the river systems. Are they fracking along the Saskatchewan River in Alberta?

We have been getting a few quakes here too, though that is more to do with being part of the "ring of fire" than fracking. Still we are getting more and larger ones too
