Knight of the Black Rose

(from the Dragonlance novels)
One of my favorite songs is named Black Rose by Thin Lizzy, an Irish Rock Band in the 1960's and 1970's.
DAZ Studio, Bryce, Poser, Wings 3D, Howler, Blender, PSP, Hexagon, MSO PowerPoint & Word, just a few of the programs I use.

Black knights are an interesting lot. They were usually 'freelance' or 'rogue' knights kind of like the 'ronin' samurai - a knight without a 'master'. Neither did he keep a squire to polish his armor. So he would put some goop made with ashes/soot and suet or some sort of fat on his armor to keep it from rusting. And so his armor was black.

So I read once or twice.

I think I read that too. Can't recall if it was in a story I read or an historical piece. If it was in a story, that idea must have come from somewhere.

It's hard to tell what's what there because 'Black Knights' are still very much a part of our 'collective consciousness' in the more modern sense - as with Batman for example. And they're immensely popular in gaming. So, finding any real honest to goodness info on it is kind of a lost cause.

It did make sense to me though. The suet or whatever grease they used would have waterproofed the metal for a time and the ashes are a form of carbon. Carbon is often used to harden some metals. Steel in particular. I think it's used in iron smithing as well, but not for sure.

It's basically the same stuff they'd use to smear on their faces and bodies in hunting days as camouflage and to keep warm. Ashes and grease for the black most times.

Seems I also read they would put the coated piece over the hot coals/embers and it would bake it on and somehow bond with the metal rather than melting off as you would think. The coals probably had to be in a certain 'state' of dying, I should imagine. Again, I only remember something about this.

From Memory the Black was Pine sap turned into Lampblack and applied to protect the poor quality Iron armor.

The black knight is now a legendary character who can be a heroe or a villain. As always with legends, there's obviously something real at the beginning.
As character inspired by black knights, I think we can add Zorro too.

That's entirely possible as well, Radkres. I just know it's something they mix up with naturally occurring ingredients. I know early on they used charcoal powder for black but by the time of knights it could have been 'more sophisticated' than that.

Yes, I'd add Zorro into that group too. Black Knights are usually Anti-heroes because there's always a story behind *why?* they are a Black Knight...even with Batman and Zorro. They recognize there is a problem that's not being addressed by the Powers That Be and take matters into their own hands...which is 'illegal' to do. That makes them a bad guy. But all too often they are the only ones capable of bringing that 'worse evil' down.

Perhaps he was  a very noble knight once but his king whom he served was slain in bad form by an enemy. So if the knight lives through that battle but manages to get away.... He may stalk the enemy until he brings him down, but he wants nothing for himself there. Just revenge for his king. This was a typical warrior mindset. And if they wanted to remain anonymous - which often Black Knights were - there was no better way to hide but behind the 'legend' of themselves.

Kind of like gunslingers in the Old West. You're always a target, so you minimize your fame and presence to do the work. Not all did but they often soon died. They were 'show-boaters' who had to proclaim their presence and make themselves known. Meanwhile Clint Eastwood is sitting quietly in the corner smirking at them and then bang-bang.

You should see if you can find something about the way Samurai Swords are forged. Without a doubt those are the best swords ever made. There is an edge hardening technique they use in which they smear a substance on the edge that has carbon of some type in it, and when it is fired and quenched, if done right it creates that characteristic curve to the blade.

Got a suggestion for a name now that I think might be a good one:
Samurai Knight

Even if they act for a right cause, the black knights are considered as outlaws by the official power and then, they're constantly tracked, which doesn't help to have a long life.
Most of time, they're stuck in a dilemma. On one hand, they need to claim why they act as they do to be understood and on the other hand, they need to hide to avoid to get caught.
