Yeah it was one of the living history guys that told me about it and my ring brooch has been treated this way so I can say from seeing it first hand it really dose work even with the pin constantly going through lots of wool lol

So it still stays black no matter how many times you use it to pin something together?

Yep, a bit has scrapped off on the pin where it has rubbed on the ring  but you really have to look for it.

This is pretty close to what mine looks like

The place where the black has scrapped is just where the ring and pin cross at the pointy end and that is probably only because its a small brooch trying to pin up all most 4 yards of wool  :yeow:

Okay...I think I've seen ones like that as well. I always wanted one of those pins but.... don't really have anything to pin that I don't already have some sort of pin in - hats mostly

At some point I would like to get a bigger fancier one, partly to handle all that wool and partly so I can layer my cloaks at events lol it can get chilly round the camp fire late at night

Yes, indeed it can! Especially here up in the mountains where they do sometimes have things like The Highland Games. I'm not sure if they always have them up in Estes Park but I know they were at one time. I do remember them being down here before that but I don't think they liked the set up much - too flat for caber tossing and such for the whole 'effect' of it. Used to work with a guy that always went and actually won the Caber Toss once and came in 2nd the next year after that. But then he moved back down South where he was from originally. It was fun. I loved seeing the wolfhounds and deerhounds there. They're so cool.

Beeswax and oil mixed together and applied to metal then heated turns black and protects the metal from rust.
This is quite possibly how the black knight armor was treated. It is also where the term "blackmail" comes from. During a battle if you were taken prisoner and you were far enough up the food chain to be ransomed your mail (armor made from metal rings) was treated in this way then sent off to who ever was likely to pay to get you back in one piece.

At lest that's roughly what I remember being told
what I could read about treatment of armors in Middle Age confirms what Dreamer said. The beeswax mixed with oil was currenbtly used to do that. But it's not mentioned that the metal was heated, which seems to mean it was a specific practice of the black knights, probably to keep the coating while a longer time than usual.
In a way, it sounds logical.
The 'regular' knights could hire many persons to treat their armor as often as they wished and then, they didn't need to heat the metal. That's why their armor kept a silvery color.
But the black knights were more or less lonely outlaws who had nobody to treat their armor. So, they had to do it themselves but their way of life didn't allow them to do it too often. That's probably why they heated the coated metal and then their armor eventually became black.

I did always read that it was heated when treated (ooo- a poem). I should think you would have to in order for that 'charred' look. Lol.

Yep with out the heating the beeswax/oil doesn't colour the metal and doesn't "stick" to it ether. Done cold it is just a cleaning/polishing thing and would have been one of the squires main jobs for his knight master.
Black Knight not having a squire would definitely needed to have found away round this.
Also the heated beeswax coating was not just limited to armor but was used on any metal that needed some sort of protective coating but didn't rate the daily polishing, things like spoons and later forks of the lower middle class or the metal fittings on a chest.
