Stencils are really great little tools or big ones!

First you'll learn how to use the already created ones and play around with them - and then you'll learn how to make your own stencils.

Presumably, you have the program - have registered it and opened it and watched the little 'slideshow presentation' that tells you what is what within the interface. Watch this as many times as you need to, to familiarize yourself with what the various tools do and where they are. It's not too bad really, so don't feel afraid to dive in with no expectations and create something cool!

This is where we open our painting 'canvas' and pick the color and texture of the watercolor paper.

This is a view of the paper selections/textures and pre-made colors.

Pick any paper type you want to use. I just used the default texture here with the color of my choice.

When you're happy with what you have, say "OK" and this sets your paper type and style for this image.

It's a good idea right now to SAVE or SAVE AS "Practice01.reb" or whatever other name you wish for it.

The '.reb' file extension is Rebelle's own native extension and saves everything so you can go back in and pick up where you last left off on a save - that is in Layers with brush settings, water, loading and so forth saved as you have it.

Now, we're ready to select a stencil for you from the ones provided by Escape Motions.

On the right side of the interface, you'll see there are two tabs toward the bottom that say "LAYERS" and "STENCILS"

Click on the STENCILS tab and select which one you want. It doesn't matter.

There is a little orange box that goes with the Stencil. This is all the manipulation tools for moving, resizing, inverting, flipping, and rotating the Stencil.

Resize by placing your cursor on the resize icon and dragging the icon diagonally up or down. Play with them all and learn them well.

Now is a good time to select your brush, brush type, size, Color, loading, water, etc so you're already to paint. BUT before you can paint again, you have to click on the LAYERS tab and get out of the STENCIL Tab.

I neglected to point out where the Color Palettes are, but I think you can see them there.

No painting in the STENCIL tab. Got that?

This Stencil is already Normal in how it comes up. We're going to invert it next....

Why do we want to invert the Stencil? So we can paint INSIDE the cut-outs, not outside of them.

This part is pretty simple and self-explanatory.

Now, the Stencil is inverted and we are going to start painting.

So, if you haven't clicked back to the LAYERS tab yet, now would be a good time to do it!

This is a closer look at all the paintbrush tools.

Now would be a good time to SAVE your image before you get the fluid dynamics working.

You don't have to use the same size or brush style as I have - but for Watercolor remember you're going to want to use a big soft brush and fairly well 'wet' paper to get the paint to run nicely.

Once you get your first few colors on, start using your TILT tool, the BLOW tool or your Blend and Smudge 'brushes'. Do a little work and then DRY the paper with the little DRY icon.

SAVE. SAVE often.

Now try some different colors and just play. If you do crash because you didn't stop the fluid dynamics from working soon enough by Drying the paper and Saving - you will have to re-open Rebelle and redo whatever didn't get saved.

This will vary from machine to machine - so you're going to have to experiment to see what works best for YOUR machine and adjust your work-flow accordingly.

Here, the Stencil has been removed and this is my first image.

While it's not terribly earth-shattering or clever, it's a start. It's a getting to know the program start.

Next, we're going to do one more but with a few variations......

Now, we shall go back to the STENCIL tab and pick out a different pre-made Stencil to play with.

With this particular Stencil, you'll have to resize it and reposition it. This will give you a chance to practice those things.

We are not going to Invert this Stencil, for we can already paint within the cut-outs on it.

Once you get a good layer of paint and water down on your Stencil, you can

I used the colors from the "Light" color palette which comes with Rebelle, and Tilted, Blended and all sorts of fun things with the paper. I got an interesting coppery image with some gold highlights and some nice 'contained dripping'.

Again, it's nothing earth-shattering but it's a pleasant picture and it's getting familiar with this very fun software.

Next tutorial will be how to make your own Stencils - which opens up even more possibilities for you!

Thanks for 'tuning in' and I will be bundling this all up in a zip file soon to post here for you

Thank you, TL. Sorry this is taking so long. After this next week is over I 'should' be able to get back to it - 'should' being the operative word there.
