hints / tips what ever
« on: October 06, 2017, 05:33:44 AM »

oh that pesky cursor
moves every time u click        gets in way CAN I remove it ??
well not really
so lets learn to use it
most programs load a new obj at world centre
blender loads them at the cursor
not a big deal you may think ......but if u build a huge scene in say poser or carrara
draging every rock/woteva from world centre can be annoying
blender lets you load things where u want them
but maybe you want it to load at world centre but how to get cursor back there
or put cursor where u want it
heres the first shortcut u must remember !!!
snap ..... opens a menu with a few options on
the bottom 4 are all for the cursor
cursor to centre.....puts cursor back at world centre
cursor to selected .......puts cursor on the selected item(s)....
if you have several objs selected or several vertices in a mesh it puts cursor at median point !
then is cursor to active
in blender if u have multiple items selected then they change to an orange colour...the last item will be a brighter orange......thats the active object
imagine 3 cubes at random locations...or try if u have blender open
select all 3 .......see how one is brighter ....thats the active one
now shift+s and pick cursor to selected........it goes to median point
now shift+s and pick cursor to active .........it goes to active item
the cursor to grid has never worked well for me ....it snaps the cursor to the 3d grid !!
try it if u like it use it but it hates me
far easier to use the locations box on the "n" panel
press n on keyboard a couple of times ........panel will open close to make it easy to see
there is one menu in there for 3d cursor.......has X,Y,Z.......type in where u want the cursor to be

is other things its useful for like scaling.........can scale from cursor ....but look for next tip lol
hope that helps

Great! I'll give it a try as soon as I'm finished with my Halloween horror...

But didn't you plan to make a thread out of these impromptu classes? More people than just me would be interested, I'm sure.

Opps, apparently this IS the thread... I thought I was reading a PM... :ummm:

sorry mate ...guess link worked

when u go looking for blender (go on you know you wanna)
MAKE sure your on the blender site (is fakes)
all op systems are covered at 32 and 64 bit {make sure you get right one}
is an installer and a zip [poke around they hide zip sometimes]
it makes little dif to you which you use ......the installer adds stuff to windows registry
so will the zip first time u use it
it adds paths to users/etc blender THIS CAN BE CHANGED in blender .....don't worry about it
so long as you know where it is .......it stores addons in here
other paths you need to be aware of IF you do sims is cache files
a smoke/water sim can store gigs an gigs of data........put it on external/spare and set it in ccleaner to remove when u click clean ........more later

is lots of addons ~ themes ......pretty much all the usual [fonts/matcaps/mats/arrrrghhh]

addons .........is loads DONT get what you don't need ......when u do get one play with it ... see if u like it .......think about what/ how u use it
they take up next to no space on disk but take up a lot of screen space on monitor !!!
so tree .........enable when u make a forest .......disable if your doing a city with no trees
makes no dif to blender but is easy on the eyes if u have less buttons!!!

Yeah, the link certainly worked - it shot me directly here from your PM without even asking...  :tearlaugh:

Downloading the right .zip was not an issue: as I'm still on WinXP (I value my privacy!) I'm quite used to be wary about what version I get hold of. Pity that I won't be able to use the latest updates but I'm definitely NOT going to step down to Win10 and share all I have with Big Brother MicroSoft.

Thanks for the hint about paths - I have two real huge HDs but that's no good reason to have them flooded with rubbish!

And yes, I promise I won't overdo with the addons - even the basic blender is overloaded with options and gadgets thus larding it with more and more buttons would be suicidal, at least until I get real familiar with it - and thus far I'm still in the toddler phase :winks:
