How I made with Ubuntu
« on: October 23, 2017, 02:34:47 PM »
OK, so Ubuntu was what worked with laptop (remember W8.1; but it seems Ubuntu can work with a lot of OS), on an USB bootable.
Sorry also, I have only French pages. But maybe with translate if you need to the procedure you'll be able to find English pages.
USB flash drive must be minimum 2GO.

To use Ubuntu, you need to download Unetbootin to create your USB-live (something exists to make CD-live but I didn't find enough place inside those I have).
USB-live must be empty and formated in FAT32.
You have several procedures, I took the first, "to create an usb-live UBuntu from the web". So once you start Unetbootin, what worked for me was to take Ubuntu in version 14-04live.
Take care in the bottom of frame the type is USB Drive, and the Drive the name of your USB (as many as possible a letter).
Just above of Type and Drive, I had a line, and I didn't understood first how many it was important. Because I put 0, then only 10. Bad ideas. For what I saw 500 isn't bad, and I took that.

Unetbootin (with the procedure I took) loads temporary file in AppData/Local/Temp (once you don't need it on the comp you can  :dustbin:  it). Once, it's complately loads in temporary files, the Step 2 begins, to send on your USB-live. For elements, you are stopped a long time on number 11, which is huge. Then all go fast.
At the end (after step 4), click on button to exit.

If the computer where you made the USB-live isn't this where you need the USB, don't reboot the comp.

Rendez-vous in a moment for a new message to follow the "story".

Ok, so now normally the USB-live is good and ready to work. But what for your computer?

First thing when you start it is to push the good button to go on the BIOS (my laptop needs to F10).
And BIOS needs to know changes in settings. I followed a part of explanations on that page ; I wasn't enough lucky for having my laptop in the list. But laptops from the same brand can give you an idea on what to do.
Before to go by USB-live, some of you helped me to change a settings in the BIOS, to boot with a Windows 8.1 key. That didn't worked, even when the order of "UEFI Boot Order" was changed to put first "USB diskette on key / USB hard disk).
You must know this only change won't work for Ubuntu. So for a good chance, you must:
- in the BIOS find "Secure Boot Configuration" tab, and inside make 2 changes:
     * Legacy Support => Enable
     * Secure Boot => DIsable
and of course the change for the UEFI if you didn't do before (Legacy part is no more in 'grey' for me, so I changed there too the order for USB diskette/hard drive).

WHen all is done, Save settings.
A new black screen will appear with a code (4 numbers). You can't keep maintain the SHIFT, so use the :locked: button to write the code. Click on enter. [french of not, this step is programmed to be with a QWERTY keyboard]

We have normally another black screen coming with blue table, with different options. Choose quickly 'try Ubuntu without installation' of something like that (it seems I lost the page with the screen capture :thud: ). "try Ubuntu without installing" (found the page )
I must click twice.

Once it's done, normally Ubuntu screen shows itself!
The load can take a moment, be patient.

After that, you enter in the Ubuntu "world", with a different desk. You have screen captures there (go down in the page).
To find your files in Windows, in the top of Ubuntu you have "Go" option; choose inside "Computer". You must see different things in relation with your good old areas.
NOw you can put your USB or external where you'll save all you want to save. Name appearing in the left column of little window can be the name of the USB/external, or a letter, or the number of Gigas :panic: When you want to remove, right click and Eject.

When all is done, to stop the computer you go in the right top corner of the desk, and you click on the gear to shut down the computer. COnfirm that.

I opened the computer another time tonight, because I forgot some stuff earlier.
I'm not sure to the procedure for a restart, so I passed again by the BIOS, just confirming to keep it like I put it before.
This time no confirmation by a code. Just a long list of I don't know what after the "try UBuntu without install".

Otherwise, I saw some people have issues if the mode of "hibernation" of computer is always working. Partitions Windows can be non reachable. A lot of 'codes' are given here (in French) to try to change the issue. SPecially the point 3.1 could be useful here.
And for codes, the terminal (consol?) is necessary. So a page to explain it.

And sometimes, people can't save their files/datas on USB in FAT32 when they are on their computer. They must format them in format NTFS.

HOwtogeek gives also some codes to use in the terminal if you have an error code like "cannot mount volume".
I had that issue the first time I could enter in computer with Ubuntu. But I didn't used the terminal because I hadn't details on the error :panic: . Nope, it was the moment where I reinstalled everything in teh USB-live, that time with the famous "500" (and the 14-04live). Problem solved for me.

I was pretty lost on the site :panic: But I don't know it as longer as you, so it's normal I guess. I used a lot the search option, and avoided all "adds" links :psycho:
