I've seen this is a BIG board!  I mean, going by what I was used to on the old dial up BBS's, even the big BBS boards were tiny compared to the web forums today.   The Attic reminds me much of the old OLD buildings on Governors Island, NYC.  They are two storie buildings with basements and full attics.  The attics were full hardwood floors, there were a few windows and skylights that got covered in snow.  The attics of the barracks buildings were full of pool and billiard tables, TV sitting areas, reading and library areas, all wide open inside the attic.  The buildings were huge.  As much as 200 yards each, and three of them had T's.   There were the odd times each of us had watch duty.  Spent a weekend just looking after the place, making sure there were no thefts, fights, fires.  Duty watch.  I would spend my time shooting 8 ball on the big billiards tables.  Made shooting on smaller 8 ball tables a breeze!  Ha!  But there were many "cubby" areas, almost like rooms.   It was very cool there.  Now its all closed up.  The Coast Guards 99 year lease ran out.  And they didn't renew the lease.  So the base, including the Captain of the Port, moved out.  Oh well.  I wonder if all that gear was just left up in those attics, just collecting dust?  Power is off, so be like a bunch of ghost halls.  Kianna would be right at home!
And ALL of this tells me that all these folks find places to just BE, and we don't even bump into each other in the halls!  LOL!  It's a BIG place!

After the completion of the Newport Bridge they closed down the Rose Island Lighthouse and my Uncle Ray, who was in the Coast Guard and was the Light Keeper on Rose Island, was relocated to a Lighthouse in NY...but I'm not sure which one.

That's cool TL!   My dad ended his enlistment tour with two years at a light station in the Mississippi Delta somewhere.  I know they called it the Southwest Light.  He was a Radarman, on a Navy ship that was off Okinawa when the A-bombs dropped.  So his enlistment ended with the end of WW II.  Like a lot of discharged servicemen flooding the country, he had trouble finding any work at all.  He reenlisted, lateraling to the Coast Guard.  He was married then, so was given the light station.  Residential and suitable for couples, there were 3 couples covering 3 shifts.   I know the CG operated a LOT of light houses and stations.   Until Loran C and then finally GPS they also operated LORAN and Radio Stations around the world.   Redundant now, so they closed em.   Most of the CG ships became too old, obsolete.  They canned a lot of these too.  My ship is now permanent moored at the Maritime Museum in Baltimore, MD.

Spent 2 years on Taney 37.  I was a Radarman.
