Thanks McGrandpa, thanks Sir Knight! It feels so good not to be the only relic from a remote past... :winks:

Though in my (early) heyday those were just tiny little bulbs, the LED's being then a brand new curiosity not even IBM or HP could afford... :ny-fathertime:

I used to know the G.E., Sylvania, Westinghouse id numbers for the dozen or so mini light bulbs.  Remember N-40 and N-42 neon bulbs?  Ahh G-47 and 52, 56 for incandescant bulbs.  Bayonet bases, for the 'push-twist' lock.  Staggered stud bayonet base.  A couple screw base.  I used to make plastic tubing with a flared end and carry a couple in my tool pouch and a small box with spare bulbs.  The consoles and panels were always needing fresh bulbs.  Included the indicator lights for the computer consoles.  did ya know that various gases in those bulbs would emit colors of light if placed near a CB antenna when you keyed the mic?  Yeah, cool stuff.  Got old in 5 minutes. Yawn.   Chiron, we're all getting old around here!  LOL!

Oh, those pieces of flared end tubing were for changing the little bulbs.  I found that a regular #2 pencils eraser did good for getting out the broken bulbs.  Those happened too.   LED's did interesting things when nobody used a current limiting resistor in-line with its power.   :explode: I set up my very first enunciator LED panel with 33 ohm eighth watt resistors.  Should have been 330 ohm.  As each LED lit, it immediately went *PAP* and no more light up.  And that is with just 4.5 vdc.   I did try 12 vdc, then 12 vac once each, no resistor.  good thing they were cheap LED's!  *CRACK!*  *CRACK!*.   HM.  Ok, semiconductor diodes require current limiting AND voltage clamping!   Enter the day of Zener!   Hey, learning all that stuff was fun folks!    :tearlaugh:

. . . LED's did interesting things when nobody used a current limiting resistor in-line with its power.   :explode:

Yeah, now it's exactly 48 years since I discovered it the hard way - will never forget those two priceless samples I'd got from a generous salesman (who hoped to sell them by the dozen to my institute and get rich). After emitting its first and only flash of red light one looked like a spent match,  and I never had the guts to try out the second one :blush2:
And to think that the next year you could buy them by the gross for a fistful of $...

Not necessarily: it's the current that kills them. Make the resistor large enough and the LED will act as its own zener and survive... well, most of the times anyway :tearlaugh:
