The following is what my friend had to say about UV mapping in Hexagon, fyi:

It is less disastrous if you try to find the projection axis (X, y, or z) and pinning axis (u or v) that looks better. You can also add some pins, although those are mostly intuitive because they act strange in Hexagon, they are more like "uv map around this" than an actual pin. Then, the trick sometimes is: you can try to map at a lower resolution ( 1 or 2 smoothing levels) and then uv-map, then smooth again, mark the same seams and usually it goes well. Others you can also add seams on places where in real clothing they are and try to break the cloth or object into pieces, as usually they map better than bigger ones.

Your friend is 100% correct! That's what I was uncovering last night as I proceeded to abuse Hexagon and make it say "uncle."
