Need some advice in taking my DAZ renders to the next level
« on: January 09, 2012, 08:56:29 PM »
All these days since I got back into DAZ and 3D rendering this same month, I have concentrated in collecting as many freebies as I can for my initial renders. Now, I've also read many tutorials to improve the quality and realism of my renders with what few resources I have, having spent very little so far (probably less than $10). But I know that, to continue taking my work's quality and realism further up, I have to spend some more.

So, I've been preparing a list of those products I think I should buy as soon as I get the chance. This list, I've assembled by picking hints and advice from different sources, looking at other artists' renders and what they used to make them, etc. I like to go into detail.

Here it is:

For clothing:
  • Morphing Fantasy Dress for V4: I have noticed that there's a HUGE amount of textures for MFD out there, and many of them for free; also, I read a great tutorial about how to make textures for clothing, and the author used this same dress as an example. I suppose that, with a dress like this, I could design my own textures and have a bunch of different styles for my figures. I saw the dress is on sale right now on DAZ, for less than $10, so I might buy it. Is this a good choice?
  • Anything else I should get?

For hair:
  • Aether dress: I read that this hairstyle is pretty much like the MFD is in the case of clothing; a variety of morphs and textures make this a very versatile hair, so I could be using it in many different renders.
  • Is there anything better out there? What do you think?

For skin:
I've been reading a lot about the Elite Human Surface shader, and right now its on sale on DAZ. I am so tempted to buy it, because of what I've read. However, I wonder if it's worth getting without any of the elite skin textures, AND if it's really as good as they make it sound. Is there any free alternative? Will it really work with most skin textures? Does it do anything for the hair as well, or is it just skin? How about furry characters, other humanoids, and creatures like dragons? Will this help?

  • V4's Morphs++? I'd like to use many of the characters I've found on ShareCG and other places, but many of them require that I have Morphs++, which I don't. What's the best way to get this?

In addition:
I already have the multiplane cyclorama, DAZ Millenium Environment, a few scene props, many free backgrounds, and some fantastic dresses found on ShareCG. My favorite figures are Aiko 4 and Furrette 2 at this time, but of course, I also like V4. I haven't used Genesis much yet. I think Genesis isn't as cool if it's not complete (I have only what's included with DAZ Studio 4.0 Standard, and the same goes for the other figures.)

If you can make any suggestions, offer some advice or whatever, you will have my gratitude. I am serious about making better 3D renders, and want to start as well-prepared as possible. Plus, if i can achieve something soon enough so I can finish my dragon-themed contest entry for this month in time, that'd be awesome.

Thank you in advance!
