Flea and tick season is upon us and
« on: May 15, 2012, 02:48:04 PM »
I found these on the web to try, if your pets are like mine where the flea stuff (Advantage or Frontline) work maybe once and not the next time....or the expense is too much...lol

I will be trying them also cause my poor baby is gonna have one nekkid tushie from biting his body....and I put flea stuff on him too.

There are some simple inexpensive solutions to help control fleas.
Flea Control for your Home
  • Sprinkle Borax into your carpets and rugs to kill fleas. Vacuum thoroughly.
  • Place a pan on your floor and line the bottom with a white towel.  Fill the pan with water and Dawn dishwashing liquid and leave it on the floor overnight with a light shining into the pan.  The fleas will be attracted to the pan and the Dawn will effectively eliminate them.
Flea Control for your Pet
  • Wash your pet with Dawn Dishwashing Liquid
  • Make Homemade Flea Shampoo:
    • 3 oz. glycerine
    • 3 oz. Joy
    • 1.5 oz. white vinegar
    • 24.5 oz. water
Makes a full quart of flea shampoo.  You can add a couple of drops of pennyroyal oil as a flea repellent.
  • 1c white vineger
  • 2c water
  • 5 drops liquid dish soap
Wash your pet with it, rinse thoroughly. The vinegar kills the fleas on contact and when done there will be a slight scent of the vinegar which will repel new fleas.
Fear not,
You are never alone,
I am there to comfort and guide you...

Thanks for the information, DA.  I have five dogs and three cats.  Frontline has been effective in the past, but it's so dang expensive when you have a whole "herd" to treat.  I would be more than happy to give some of these thrifty ideas a whirl if the fleas show up this season.  Some years we dodge the itchy bullet and some years we are not so lucky.  I am crossing my fingers, but also putting Dawn on the shopping list just in case.

Bonus kitty picture . . . this is my daughter's cat, Sassy, who is the newest member of our zoo. (Yup, got a shiny new camera for Mother's Day!)

Can't afford frontline or any other flea meds now... even the "generic" stuff at walmart is now out of price range...

So far, we've been REALLLLLY lucky *crossing fingers*... one dog, three cats... cats are "house-bound" - except when Midnight-Kitty "escapes".  So, if a problem started, it would start on Autumn-Puppy, then spread like wild-fire.  One reason I check "Her Furriness, Queen of Shedding" daily LOL.

BUT, now I know if I find any of those annoying lil buggers... what to do without spending an arm & leg on a product that makes the dog sick for a week after application!!!

I use Diatomaceous Earth  to control fleas in my back yard, so I bring them into the house and infect my cat. I been doing my back yard for the past 5 years now and don't have a flea problem, also keeping the grass cut short also helps in keeping the fleas in check.
