Alba Tells Her Story
|
Ursula listened as Alba told her of the night the 'sisters' of her ancient and holy Order of the Daughters of the Moon attacked her before a meeting, pretty much en masse. They'd been turned into vampires by the conquering mad-man, thinking to capture her. But she was the Head of that Order and she was more powerful than any of them.
"I escaped. I couldn't even go home to the palace. He'd taken that too. I watched it torched from far away. I had a boat stashed in case of something like this. A few clothes and some coin. Not much. I rowed across the strait to the capitol on the mainland. There I bought passage to Terra on a Merchant Cargo ship, hoping to find something there. I served as a mechanic," Alba laughed. "Help. Anything." Alba shrugged with a helpless gesture. "What is it with me and Vampires anyway?"
Ursula smiled strangely at her and leaned forward as if telling her a secret. She inhaled deeply, closing her grey eyes. "It's your blood, girl. It's like a heady foreign smelling perfume to us - dark and mysterious. It's not like something they're accustomed to smell. It's stupid and self-defeating to turn everyone around you. Completely. We try to use our heads here.
"Not all of them, but some of the Humans here have chosen to take a Vampire, Were or Fae as a mate.... They know us. They came here with us. Nature will have it's course. Does he still hunt you?" Alba shook her head. "No one here will betray you. We don't leave the planet. You didn't watch Earth go to Hell in a hand-basket. We did. We like it here. You will too, if you give us a chance."
